Closed immersion

Definition
Let and be schemes. A morphism of schemes is a closed immersion if:
- is a homeomorphism of onto a closed subset of ;
- the sheaf map is surjective, that is, surjective on every stalk.
Remarks
Example: for a ring and an ideal , the morphism induced by is a closed immersion. Its image is the closed set , and on the stalk at the map is , which is onto. Every closed immersion into is isomorphic to one of these. Non-example: let be a field and let come from the inclusion . Then is a homeomorphism onto the whole space, so clause 1 holds. Clause 2 fails at the origin: does not lie in the image of the stalk map. Non-example: the open immersion fails clause 1, since its image is not closed.
