Closure of an operator

Definition
Let and be normed spaces, and let be a closable operator from to . The closure of is the operator whose graph is the closure of the graph of :
Remarks
Explicitly, if and only if there is a sequence in with such that converges, and then . The operator is closed, it extends , and it is contained in every closed extension of .
Example: on with the supremum norm, let be differentiation on polynomials. Every is a limit of polynomials with uniformly: take polynomials uniformly and set . Combined with the closedness of differentiation on , this gives and .
Non-example: an operator that is not closable has no closure, because the closure of its graph contains a pair with and is not a graph.
A closed operator is its own closure. A subspace with is called a core of .
