Definition

This is the coefficient-free, skew-symmetrizable version. Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let ℱ=ℚ(u1,…,un)\mathcal{F} = \Q(u_1, \dots, u_n) be the field of rational functions in nn indeterminates. An integer n×nn \times n matrix B=(bij)B = (b_{ij}) is skew-symmetrizable if there are positive integers d1,…,dnd_1, \dots, d_n with dibij=−djbjid_i b_{ij} = -d_j b_{ji} for all i,ji, j. A seed is a pair (𝐱,B)(\mathbf{x}, B), where 𝐱=(x1,…,xn)\mathbf{x} = (x_1, \dots, x_n) is a free generating set of ℱ\mathcal{F} over ℚ\Q and BB is skew-symmetrizable. For k∈{1,…,n}k \in \set{1, \dots, n}, the mutation of (𝐱,B)(\mathbf{x}, B) at kk is the seed (𝐱′,B′)(\mathbf{x}', B') given as follows, where [a]+=max⁡(a,0)[a]_+ = \max(a, 0):

  1. xi′=xix'_i = x_i for i≠ki \ne k, and xk′xk=∏ixi[bik]++∏ixi[−bik]+x'_k x_k = \prod_{i} x_i^{[b_{ik}]_+} + \prod_{i} x_i^{[-b_{ik}]_+}.
  2. bij′=−bijb'_{ij} = -b_{ij} if i=ki = k or j=kj = k.
  3. bij′=bij+12(∣bik∣bkj+bik∣bkj∣)b'_{ij} = b_{ij} + \tfrac{1}{2}\left(\abs{b_{ik}} b_{kj} + b_{ik} \abs{b_{kj}}\right) otherwise.

Fix an initial seed (𝐱,B)(\mathbf{x}, B). The cluster variables are the entries of all seeds reached from it by finite sequences of mutations, and each such 𝐱′\mathbf{x}' is a cluster. The cluster algebra 𝒜(B)\mathcal{A}(B) is the subring of ℱ\mathcal{F} generated by all cluster variables.

Remarks

Example: n=2n = 2 and B=(01−10)B = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, which is skew-symmetric. Mutation at 11 gives x1′=(1+x2)/x1x'_1 = (1 + x_2)/x_1, since b21=−1b_{21} = -1 and b11=0b_{11} = 0. Alternating mutations give the cluster variables x1x_1, x2x_2, (x2+1)/x1(x_2 + 1)/x_1, (x1+x2+1)/(x1x2)(x_1 + x_2 + 1)/(x_1 x_2), (x1+1)/x2(x_1 + 1)/x_2, five in all. This is the cluster algebra of type A2A_2. Non-example: B=(0110)B = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} is not skew-symmetrizable, because d1b12=−d2b21d_1 b_{12} = -d_2 b_{21} would give d1=−d2d_1 = -d_2 with d1,d2>0d_1, d_2 > 0. Mutation is an involution: mutating twice at the same kk returns the original seed. By the Laurent phenomenon of Fomin and Zelevinsky, every cluster variable is a Laurent polynomial with integer coefficients in the initial cluster. The general definition also allows coefficients from a semifield.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
