Definition
Let be an even measurable pair potential that is bounded below, let , and let be its Mayer f-function, with . For a bounded region and an activity , the grand canonical partition function is For , let be the set of connected graphs with vertex set . The cluster expansion (Mayer expansion) of is the power series It holds as an identity of formal power series in .
Remarks
In the thermodynamic limit it becomes , with and . Here is the pressure, and the are the Mayer cluster coefficients. Example: there is one connected graph on one vertex and one on two vertices, so and . Non-example: the sum over all graphs, connected or not, gives itself rather than its logarithm, so it is not the cluster expansion. For stable and regular pair potentials the series for has a positive radius of convergence. Abstract polymer versions replace particles by polymers and by an incompatibility relation.
