Clutching construction
Definition
Let and . Write the sphere as the union of two closed hemispheres and , each homeomorphic to the disc , with intersection the equator . Let be a continuous map into the general linear group. The clutching construction produces the complex vector bundle over , where is identified with for every and . The map is the clutching function of .
Remarks
If and are homotopic, then . Every complex vector bundle of rank over is isomorphic to some . Since is connected, this gives a bijection between homotopy classes of maps and isomorphism classes of rank complex vector bundles over . The same construction with gives real vector bundles; then base points and orientations need more care, as has two components.
Example: for and , the maps from the unit circle to represent all homotopy classes. So the line bundles over are the , , classified by the degree . The tautological line bundle over is for or , depending on orientation conventions.
Non-example: the constant map into the matrices is continuous, but its values are not invertible, so it is not a map into . The gluing then collapses fibres over the equator, and the quotient is not a vector bundle.
