Example

A cnoidal wave is a periodic travelling wave solution of the Korteweg–de Vries equation. This equation models long water waves of small amplitude moving in one direction in shallow water. Take the KdV equation in the normalised form ut+6uux+uxxx=0u_t + 6uu_x + u_{xxx} = 0. Let e1>e2>e3e_1 > e_2 > e_3 be real numbers, let m=e1−e2e1−e3∈(0,1)m = \frac{e_1 - e_2}{e_1 - e_3} \in (0, 1) and γ=(e1−e3)/2\gamma = \sqrt{(e_1 - e_3)/2}. Then u(x,t)=e2+(e1−e2) cn⁡2(γ(x−ct) ∣ m),c=2(e1+e2+e3),u(x, t) = e_2 + (e_1 - e_2)\,\operatorname{cn}^2\big(\gamma(x - ct) \,\big|\, m\big), \qquad c = 2(e_1 + e_2 + e_3), is a solution, where cn⁡\operatorname{cn} is the Jacobi elliptic function with parameter mm. Check: for u=f(ξ)u = f(\xi) with ξ=x−ct\xi = x - ct, the equation integrates twice to 12(f′)2=−(f−e1)(f−e2)(f−e3)\tfrac{1}{2}(f')^2 = -(f - e_1)(f - e_2)(f - e_3). The identities cn⁡′=−sn⁡dn⁡\operatorname{cn}' = -\operatorname{sn}\operatorname{dn} and dn⁡2=1−m+mcn⁡2\operatorname{dn}^2 = 1 - m + m\operatorname{cn}^2 apply to the stated ff. They show that it satisfies this equation exactly when 2γ2m=e1−e22\gamma^2 m = e_1 - e_2 and 2γ2(1−m)=e2−e32\gamma^2(1 - m) = e_2 - e_3. These two conditions hold by the choice of mm and γ\gamma.

Remarks

The wave oscillates between the trough level e2e_2 and the crest level e1e_1, with period 2K(m)/γ2K(m)/\gamma in ξ\xi, where KK is the complete elliptic integral of the first kind. As m→0m \to 0 the wave becomes sinusoidal, the linear limit. As m→1m \to 1, that is e2→e3e_2 \to e_3, the period tends to infinity and cn⁡\operatorname{cn} tends to sech⁡\operatorname{sech}, so the wave becomes the soliton u=e3+(e1−e3)sech⁡2(γξ)u = e_3 + (e_1 - e_3)\operatorname{sech}^2(\gamma\xi). The name comes from the function cn⁡\operatorname{cn}, by analogy with "sinusoidal".
