Definition
Let be a field. A coalgebra over is a vector space over with linear maps , the comultiplication, and , the counit, such that:
- as maps (coassociativity).
- , where and are identified with (counit law).
Here is the tensor product over .
Remarks
Example: for a set , let be the vector space with basis , and put and for . Both sides of clause 1 send to , and both maps in clause 2 send to . Non-example: the same with for all fails clause 2, since . Another example is with and if and otherwise. The definition works in the same way over a commutative ring in place of . Over a field, every element of a coalgebra lies in a finite-dimensional subcoalgebra.
