Definition
Let and let and be closed (compact, without boundary) smooth manifolds of dimension . A cobordism between and is a compact smooth manifold with boundary of dimension with diffeomorphic to . The manifolds and are cobordant if a cobordism between them exists.
Remarks
Being cobordant is an equivalence relation: gives reflexivity, and two cobordisms can be glued along a common boundary component for transitivity. The set of classes is an abelian group under disjoint union, and every element has order , since bounds . In the oriented version, is oriented and , where is with the opposite orientation; this gives the groups .
Example: the circle bounds the disc , so is cobordant to the empty manifold. Every sphere is likewise null-cobordant.
Non-example: the real projective plane is not the boundary of any compact -manifold. A closed manifold that bounds a compact manifold has even Euler characteristic, but .
A manifold cobordant to the empty manifold is called null-cobordant.
