Definition

Let nโ‰ฅ0n \ge 0. Let MM and NN be closed smooth manifolds of dimension nn, that is, compact and without boundary. They are cobordant if there is a compact smooth manifold with boundary WW of dimension n+1n + 1 whose boundary is diffeomorphic to MโŠ”NM \sqcup N. This is an equivalence relation; let ๐”‘n\mathfrak{N}_n be the set of its classes. The unoriented cobordism ring is the graded ring ๐”‘โˆ—=โจnโ‰ฅ0๐”‘n,\mathfrak{N}_* = \bigoplus_{n \ge 0} \mathfrak{N}_n, with addition [M]+[N]=[MโŠ”N][M] + [N] = [M \sqcup N], zero the class of the empty manifold, and multiplication [M]โ‹…[N]=[Mร—N][M] \cdot [N] = [M \times N].

Remarks

Every element has order 22, since MโŠ”MM \sqcup M is the boundary of Mร—[0,1]M \times [0, 1]; so ๐”‘โˆ—\mathfrak{N}_* is an algebra over ๐”ฝ2\F_2. Thom proved that ๐”‘โˆ—โ‰…๐”ฝ2[xi:iโ‰ฅ2,ย iโ‰ 2jโˆ’1]\mathfrak{N}_* \cong \F_2[x_i : i \ge 2,\ i \neq 2^j - 1] with degโกxi=i\deg x_i = i, and that ๐”‘n\mathfrak{N}_n is isomorphic to the homotopy group ฯ€n(MO)\pi_n(MO) of the Thom spectrum MOMO.

The oriented cobordism ring ฮฉโˆ—SO\Omega^{SO}_* uses closed oriented manifolds and requires โˆ‚Wโ‰…MโŠ”(โˆ’N)\partial W \cong M \sqcup (-N) as oriented manifolds, where โˆ’N-N is NN with the opposite orientation. It is graded commutative, and ฮฉโˆ—SOโŠ—โ„š\Omega^{SO}_* \otimes \Q is a polynomial ring over โ„š\Q on the classes of the complex projective spaces โ„‚P2k\C P^{2k}, kโ‰ฅ1k \ge 1.

Example: ๐”‘1=0\mathfrak{N}_1 = 0, since every closed 11-manifold is a finite union of circles and each circle bounds a disc. Also ๐”‘2โ‰…โ„ค/2\mathfrak{N}_2 \cong \Z/2, generated by โ„P2\R P^2, which does not bound because its Euler characteristic is odd.

Non-example: โ„P2\R P^2 is a closed surface that is not cobordant to the empty manifold. Indeed, if โ„P2=โˆ‚W\R P^2 = \partial W for a compact 33-manifold WW, then the Euler characteristic of โ„P2\R P^2 would be even, but it is 11.

Further variants use manifolds with a stably complex structure, a spin structure or a framing, and each is the coefficient ring of a Thom spectrum.
