Coefficient of a power series

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring and let nn be a natural number. The coefficient of XnX^n is the map [Xn]:R[ ⁣[X] ⁣]→R[X^n] : R[\![X]\!] \to R that sends a formal power series f=∑m≥0amXmf = \sum_{m \ge 0} a_m X^m to ana_n.

Remarks

The map [Xn][X^n] is RR-linear: [Xn](f+g)=[Xn]f+[Xn]g[X^n](f + g) = [X^n] f + [X^n] g and [Xn](rf)=r [Xn]f[X^n](r f) = r\, [X^n] f. Two series are equal if and only if all their coefficients are equal. The coefficient of a product is given by the node product of power series.

Explanations

L1 human

The coefficient [Xn]f[X^n] f is the number in front of XnX^n in the series ff. For f=1+2X+3X2+…f = 1 + 2X + 3X^2 + \dots, the coefficient [X2]f[X^2] f is 33.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
