Cofibration
Definition
Let and be topological spaces and let . Let be a continuous map. The map is a cofibration if the following holds for every topological space . For every continuous map and every homotopy with for all , there is a homotopy with:
- for all ;
- for all and .
Remarks
For the inclusion of a subspace , this says that the pair has the homotopy extension property. Every cofibration is a homeomorphism onto its image, and if is Hausdorff the image is closed in . Example: the inclusion is a cofibration, and so is the inclusion of a subcomplex of a CW complex. Non-example: the inclusion is not a cofibration, since is Hausdorff and is not closed in it. Cofibrations are stable under pushout and under composition.
