Cofinite topology

Example

Let XX be a set and let τ\tau consist of ∅\varnothing and of all sets U⊆XU \subseteq X whose complement X∖UX \setminus U is finite. Then τ\tau is a topology on XX, the cofinite topology.

Remarks

The closed sets are XX and the finite subsets of XX. The cofinite topology is T1: each one-point set is closed. If XX is infinite, any two nonempty open sets meet. Thus the space is not Hausdorff. Each space with the cofinite topology is compact.

Explanations

L1 human

In the cofinite topology, a set is open when it misses only finitely many points. On an infinite set, open sets are very large, so no two nonempty open sets are disjoint.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
