Definition

Let GG be a Lie group and let kk be a field. The cohomology of GG with coefficients in kk is the graded kk-algebra H∗(G;k)=⨁n≥0Hn(G;k)H^*(G; k) = \bigoplus_{n \ge 0} H^n(G; k). Here Hn(G;k)H^n(G; k) is the singular cohomology of the underlying manifold of GG, and the product is the cup product. When GG is connected and each Hn(G;k)H^n(G; k) is finite-dimensional, the multiplication μ ⁣:G×G→G\mu \colon G \times G \to G also gives a coproduct μ∗\mu^*, which makes H∗(G;k)H^*(G; k) a Hopf algebra.

Remarks

Example: G=S1G = S^1, the circle group. Then H0(S1;ℝ)=ℝH^0(S^1; \R) = \R, H1(S1;ℝ)=ℝxH^1(S^1; \R) = \R x, and all other groups vanish. So H∗(S1;ℝ)H^*(S^1; \R) is the exterior algebra on one generator xx of degree 11, with μ∗(x)=x⊗1+1⊗x\mu^*(x) = x \otimes 1 + 1 \otimes x.

Non-example: the cohomology of GG as an abstract group, H∗(BGδ;k)H^*(BG^\delta; k), or the continuous cohomology of GG, is a different object. For G=S1G = S^1 the continuous cohomology with coefficients in ℝ\R vanishes in positive degrees, while H1(S1;ℝ)≠0H^1(S^1; \R) \ne 0.

For k=ℝk = \R, the de Rham theorem identifies H∗(G;ℝ)H^*(G; \R) with the de Rham cohomology of GG. If GG is compact and connected, averaging over GG shows that each class has a left- and right-invariant representative. This gives an isomorphism H∗(G;ℝ)≅H∗(𝔤;ℝ)H^*(G; \R) \cong H^*(\mathfrak{g}; \R) with the Lie algebra cohomology of the Lie algebra 𝔤\mathfrak{g}.
