Cohomology operation

Definition
Let and be abelian groups and let be integers. Write for singular cohomology with coefficients in . A cohomology operation of type is a family of functions , one for each topological space . The family must be natural. That is, for every continuous map . Here denotes the induced maps in cohomology.
Remarks
In the language of categories, a cohomology operation is a natural transformation between the functors and to sets. The functions need not be homomorphisms. Operations of type correspond bijectively to elements of , through , where is the fundamental class of the Eilenberg–MacLane space.
Example: the cup square is an operation of type . The check: , because is a ring homomorphism. It is not additive in general: .
Non-example: on , let if is path-connected and otherwise. Take discrete, a point, the map to , and . Then but , so the naturality condition fails.
