Definition

Let XX be a topological space and let RR be a commutative ring with 11. The cohomology ring of XX with coefficients in RR is the direct sum of the singular cohomology groups H∙(X;R)=⨁k≥0Hk(X;R).H^\bullet(X; R) = \bigoplus_{k \ge 0} H^k(X; R). Its multiplication extends the cup product Hk×Hl→Hk+lH^k \times H^l \to H^{k+l} bilinearly to all of H∙(X;R)H^\bullet(X; R).

Remarks

It is an associative graded ring with unit, and an RR-algebra. It is graded commutative: ab=(−1)klbaab = (-1)^{kl} ba for a∈Hka \in H^k and b∈Hlb \in H^l. A continuous map f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y induces a ring homomorphism f∗ ⁣:H∙(Y;R)→H∙(X;R)f^* \colon H^\bullet(Y; R) \to H^\bullet(X; R).

Example: H∙(Sn;ℤ)≅ℤ[x]/(x2)H^\bullet(S^n; \Z) \cong \Z[x]/(x^2) with xx of degree n≥1n \ge 1, since x2x^2 would lie in H2n(Sn)=0H^{2n}(S^n) = 0. For the complex projective space ℂPn\C P^n, H∙(ℂPn;ℤ)≅ℤ[x]/(xn+1)H^\bullet(\C P^n; \Z) \cong \Z[x]/(x^{n+1}) with xx of degree 22.

Non-example: singular homology H∙(X)H_\bullet(X) is a graded group of the same shape, but in general it carries no natural product of this kind. The cup product needs the diagonal map X→X×XX \to X \times X, which goes the wrong way for homology.
