Partial differential equations Definition
Cole–Hopf transformation
Definition
Let , let be an open interval, and let . Let be a positive function with continuous partial derivatives , , . The Cole–Hopf transformation of is the function Its basic property: if solves the heat equation , then solves the viscous Burgers' equation .
Remarks
Proof of the basic property: put , so . The heat equation for becomes . Differentiating in and multiplying by gives .
Inverse direction: given initial values , take . Solving the heat equation with data and transforming gives the solution of Burgers' equation with data , for bounded continuous on .
Example: with solves , since both sides equal . Its transformation is . This is a traveling wave of speed from to .
Non-example: is not allowed on , since it is not positive. Its transformation is undefined at the zeros of .
