Comma category
Builds on FunctorMorphismCommutative diagram
Definition
Let and be functors. The comma category is defined as follows:
- its objects are the triples with an object of , an object of and a morphism of ;
- a morphism is a pair with in and in such that ;
- composition is , and the identity of is .
Remarks
The condition in clause 2 says that the square with sides , , and is a commutative diagram; pasting two such squares shows that composites are again morphisms. Example: with , the comma category is the arrow category of , whose objects are the morphisms . In the arrow category of sets, the pair with is a morphism from on to itself, since . Non-example: for on , the same pair is not a morphism from to , since when . When is the category with one object and one morphism, picks an object of and one writes . There are projection functors from to and to .
