Commutator theory

Summary

Commutator theory extends the commutator of normal subgroups of a group to congruences of arbitrary algebras. For two congruences α\alpha and β\beta of an algebra it defines a congruence [α,β][\alpha, \beta] by a condition on term operations, the term condition. For groups it gives the usual commutator subgroup [M,N][M, N] of normal subgroups, and for rings it gives the ideal MN+NMMN + NM. The theory works best in congruence-modular varieties, where it yields notions of abelian, solvable and nilpotent algebras that behave as in group theory.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
