Commuting elements

Builds on Binary operation

Definition

Let ∗\ast be a binary operation on a set SS and let a,b∈Sa, b \in S. The elements aa and bb commute if a∗b=b∗aa \ast b = b \ast a.

Remarks

Example: in the set of 2×22 \times 2 real matrices with matrix multiplication, every matrix AA commutes with 2A2A, because A(2A)=2A2=(2A)AA(2A) = 2A^2 = (2A)A.

Non-example: the matrices A=(1101),B=(1011)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, \quad B = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} do not commute, because AB=(2111)AB = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} while BA=(1112)BA = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & 2 \end{pmatrix}.

The relation "commutes with" is reflexive and symmetric but not transitive in general. In the example, AA commutes with the identity matrix II and II commutes with BB, but AA and BB do not commute. The operation ∗\ast is commutative if and only if every two elements of SS commute.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
