Definition
Let and be topological spaces, and let be the set of continuous maps from to . For a compact subset and an open subset , put The compact-open topology on is the topology generated by the subbasis of all sets .
Remarks
If is a metric space, the compact-open topology is the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets of . In particular, a sequence converges to if and only if for every compact . If is locally compact Hausdorff, the evaluation map , , is continuous.
Example: for and , the space is compact, so convergence in is uniform convergence on .
Non-example: the topology of pointwise convergence on is not the compact-open topology. Let be the piecewise linear map with , and for . Then for each , but for every , so does not converge to in the compact-open topology.
