Compact quantum group
Builds on Compact space
Definition
Let be a unital C*-algebra and let denote its minimal C*-tensor product with itself. A compact quantum group is a pair where is a unital -homomorphism, called the comultiplication, such that:
- (coassociativity);
- the linear spans of and of are both norm-dense in (cancellation).
Remarks
Example: let be a compact Hausdorff group and , so that . Set . Coassociativity is the associativity . The products are the functions . Since is a homeomorphism of , their span is a self-adjoint subalgebra that separates points and contains . So it is dense by the Stone–Weierstrass theorem, and the other span is handled in the same way.
Non-example: let with ordinary multiplication, a compact semigroup that is not a group, and define on by the same formula. Clause 1 holds, but every function is constant in on the line . This property passes to linear combinations and uniform limits, so the span is not dense, and clause 2 fails.
For commutative , every compact quantum group is of the form for a compact group . Every compact quantum group has a unique state , the Haar state, with for all ; it plays the role of the Haar measure.
