Definition
Let be a topological space. The space is compactly generated if it satisfies the following condition. A subset is closed whenever is closed in for every compact Hausdorff space and every continuous map .
Remarks
If is Hausdorff, the condition is equivalent to the classical one. A subset is closed whenever is closed in for every compact subset .
Example: every metric space is compactly generated. If is not closed, there is a sequence converging to some . The set is compact, and is not closed in .
Non-example: an uncountable set with the cocountable topology. Its compact subsets are finite, so every test map has finite image. Finite subsets of are closed and discrete, so every is closed. But not every subset of is closed.
