Definition

Let ℋ\mathcal{H} be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space, and let A1,…,AkA_1, \dots, A_k be observables on ℋ\mathcal{H}, that is, self-adjoint operators. The set {A1,…,Ak}\set{A_1, \dots, A_k} is a complete set of commuting observables if:

  1. AiAj=AjAiA_i A_j = A_j A_i for all i,ji, j;
  2. for every (λ1,…,λk)∈ℝk(\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_k) \in \R^k, the joint eigenspace {ψ∈ℋ:Aiψ=λiψ for i=1,…,k}\set{\psi \in \mathcal{H} : A_i\psi = \lambda_i\psi \text{ for } i = 1, \dots, k} has dimension at most 11.

Remarks

By clause 1, the AiA_i are commuting self-adjoint operators, so they have a common orthonormal basis of eigenvectors. Clause 2 says that this basis is unique up to order and phases, and that each basis vector is labelled by its tuple of eigenvalues. Equivalently, every operator that commutes with all AiA_i is a polynomial in A1,…,AkA_1, \dots, A_k. In infinite dimension, one asks that the spectral projections of the AiA_i commute and that the von Neumann algebra they generate be maximal abelian.

Example: let e1,e2e_1, e_2 be the standard basis of ℂ2\C^2. On ℂ2⊗ℂ2≅ℂ4\C^2 \otimes \C^2 \cong \C^4, let A1=σz⊗IA_1 = \sigma_z \otimes I and A2=I⊗σzA_2 = I \otimes \sigma_z with σz=diag(1,−1)\sigma_z = \mathrm{diag}(1, -1). They commute, and the four joint eigenspaces for (±1,±1)(\pm 1, \pm 1) are spanned by the four vectors ea⊗ebe_a \otimes e_b, each of dimension 11.

Non-example: {A1}\set{A_1} alone commutes with itself, but its eigenspace for the eigenvalue 11 is spanned by e1⊗e1e_1 \otimes e_1 and e1⊗e2e_1 \otimes e_2, of dimension 22, so clause 2 fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
