Definition

Let (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu) be a measure space. Let Σμ\Sigma_\mu be the family of sets A∪SA \cup S, where A∈ΣA \in \Sigma and SS is a subset of some null set N∈ΣN \in \Sigma. Define μˉ ⁣:Σμ→[0,∞]\bar{\mu} \colon \Sigma_\mu \to [0, \infty] by μˉ(A∪S)=μ(A)\bar{\mu}(A \cup S) = \mu(A). The measure space (X,Σμ,μˉ)(X, \Sigma_\mu, \bar{\mu}) is the completion of (X,Σ,μ)(X, \Sigma, \mu).

Remarks

The family Σμ\Sigma_\mu is a σ-algebra that contains Σ\Sigma. The value μˉ(A∪S)\bar{\mu}(A \cup S) does not depend on the choice of AA and SS. Indeed, if A∪S=A′∪S′A \cup S = A' \cup S' with S⊆NS \subseteq N and S′⊆N′S' \subseteq N', then AA and A′A' differ only inside the null set N∪N′N \cup N', so μ(A)=μ(A′)\mu(A) = \mu(A'). Then μˉ\bar{\mu} is a complete measure that extends μ\mu, and it is the smallest complete extension. For example, let X={1,2,3}X = \set{1, 2, 3}, Σ={∅,{1,2},{3},X}\Sigma = \set{\varnothing, \set{1, 2}, \set{3}, X}, and μ(A)=1\mu(A) = 1 if 3∈A3 \in A and 00 otherwise. The null set {1,2}\set{1, 2} gives Σμ\Sigma_\mu equal to the power set of XX, with μˉ(A)=1\bar{\mu}(A) = 1 if 3∈A3 \in A and 00 otherwise. With the same Σ\Sigma and ν(A)=1\nu(A) = 1 if 1∈A1 \in A and 00 otherwise, the only null sets are ∅\varnothing and {3}\set{3}. So Σν=Σ\Sigma_\nu = \Sigma, and the power set is not the σ-algebra of the completion of ν\nu. The completion of Lebesgue measure on the Borel sets of ℝ\R is Lebesgue measure on the Lebesgue measurable sets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
