Definition
Let be a field of characteristic with algebraic closure , and let be an elliptic curve over . Let be the ring of endomorphisms of defined over , that is, morphisms over that send the origin to . For let be multiplication by ; the map embeds in . The curve has complex multiplication, or is a CM elliptic curve, if . That is, has an endomorphism that is not of the form .
Remarks
In characteristic , is either or an order in an imaginary quadratic field , and one then says that has CM by . Over , write for a lattice ; then , which explains the name.
Example: over . The map sends to itself, since . It fixes , and , so for every integer ; hence has CM, by .
Non-example: over has -invariant , which is not an algebraic integer. The -invariant of a CM curve is always an algebraic integer, so this curve has endomorphism ring .
Over a finite field the endomorphism ring of every elliptic curve is larger than , so the notion is mainly used in characteristic .
