Complex torus

Builds on Lattice (group)Quotient group

Definition

Let g≥1g \ge 1 be an integer. A lattice in ℂg\C^g is a subgroup Λ⊆ℂg\Lambda \subseteq \C^g generated by 2g2g vectors that are linearly independent over ℝ\R. A complex torus of dimension gg is the quotient group X=ℂg/ΛX = \C^g / \Lambda for a lattice Λ\Lambda in ℂg\C^g. It carries the complex manifold structure for which the projection ℂg→X\C^g \to X is a local biholomorphism.

Remarks

Example: Λ=ℤ+ℤτ\Lambda = \Z + \Z \tau with τ∈ℂ\tau \in \C and Im⁡τ>0\operatorname{Im} \tau > 0. The numbers 11 and τ\tau are linearly independent over ℝ\R, so Λ\Lambda is a lattice in ℂ\C, and ℂ/Λ\C / \Lambda is a complex torus of dimension 11. Every complex torus of dimension 11 is the set of complex points of an elliptic curve.

Non-example: ℤ⊆ℂ\Z \subseteq \C is a discrete subgroup, but it is generated by only one vector, not two. The quotient ℂ/ℤ\C / \Z is not compact; the map z↦e2πizz \mapsto e^{2 \pi i z} identifies it with ℂ∗\C^{*}.

Let X=ℂg/ΛX = \C^g / \Lambda be a complex torus. Then XX comes from an abelian variety if and only if ℂg\C^g has a positive definite Hermitian form HH with Im⁡H(Λ×Λ)⊆ℤ\operatorname{Im} H(\Lambda \times \Lambda) \subseteq \Z. Such a form is called a Riemann form or a polarization.
