Complexification of a Lie group
Builds on Lie group
Definition
Let be a real Lie group. A complexification (or universal complexification) of is a pair with two properties.
- is a complex Lie group and is a continuous homomorphism.
- For each complex Lie group and each continuous homomorphism , there is exactly one holomorphic homomorphism with .
Remarks
By the universal property, a complexification is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with ; it always exists.
Example: with and the inclusion. A continuous homomorphism is for some in the Lie algebra of . Then is a holomorphic homomorphism extending . It is the only one, since two holomorphic maps on that agree on are equal.
Non-example: with and fails clause 2. Take and . For a holomorphic homomorphism , the map is a holomorphic homomorphism , so for a constant , and gives , so .
The map need not be injective. For the universal cover , the complexification is , and is the covering map onto , with infinite kernel. For a compact Lie group , the map is injective, and is a maximal compact subgroup of .
