Computable set
Builds on Computable functionSubset
Definition
Let be a subset of the natural numbers. The characteristic function of is , with if and if . The set is computable, or recursive, or decidable, if is a total computable function. The same definition applies to subsets of .
Remarks
Example: the set of prime numbers is computable. A machine can test for divisors with , which takes finitely many steps, and so computes .
Non-example: the set is not computable, by the undecidability of the halting problem. Its characteristic function is total but not computable.
A set is computable if and only if both and are computably enumerable. The computable sets are closed under union, intersection and complement.
