Computably enumerable set
Builds on Computable functionSubset
Definition
Let be a subset of the natural numbers. The set is computably enumerable, or recursively enumerable, if is the domain of a partial computable function . That is, .
Remarks
The following conditions on are equivalent.
- is computably enumerable.
- is empty or the range of a total computable function .
- There is a computable set such that .
Example: the halting set is computably enumerable. It is the domain of the partial computable function that, on input , runs program on input and then outputs .
Non-example: the complement is not computably enumerable. Otherwise and its complement would both be computably enumerable, and then would be computable, which is false.
