Conditionally negative definite function

Summary

A conditionally negative definite function on a group GG is a real function ψ\psi with ψ(e)=0\psi(e) = 0 and ψ(g−1)=ψ(g)\psi(g^{-1}) = \psi(g) and one more condition. The sums ∑i,jcicjψ(gj−1gi)\sum_{i,j} c_i c_j \psi(g_j^{-1} g_i) are ≤0\le 0 whenever the real coefficients cic_i add up to 00. The typical example is ψ(g)=∥b(g)∥2\psi(g) = \norm{b(g)}^2, the squared displacement of a point under an affine isometric action on a real Hilbert space. By Schoenberg's theorem, ψ\psi is conditionally negative definite exactly when e−tψe^{-t\psi} is a positive-definite function for every t>0t > 0. These functions measure how a group can act on Hilbert spaces. They appear in the theory of property (T), of the Haagerup property, and of Lévy processes.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
