Positive-definite function on a group

Summary

A positive-definite function on a group GG is a complex function φ\varphi on GG with the following property. For all g1,…,gn∈Gg_1, \dots, g_n \in G, the matrix (φ(gi−1gj))i,j\big(\varphi(g_i^{-1}g_j)\big)_{i,j} is positive semidefinite. The diagonal matrix coefficients g↦⟨π(g)v,v⟩g \mapsto \ip{\pi(g)v}{v} of unitary representations are positive-definite, and conversely every continuous positive-definite function arises in this way. This correspondence links functions on a group with its representations, and it underlies Bochner's theorem and the Gelfand–Raikov theorem.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
