Positive-definite function on a group
Builds on Topological groupPositive definite matrixUnitary representation
Definition
Let be a topological group with identity . A continuous function is positive-definite if for every , all and all ,
Remarks
Equivalently, each matrix is Hermitian and positive semidefinite. It follows that , and for all . For a discrete group, or when continuity is not part of the setting, the same condition defines positive-definite functions without the continuity requirement.
Example: let be a unitary representation of on and , and put . Then is continuous, and
Non-example: the constant function . With and , the sum is .
Conversely, every continuous positive-definite function has the form for some unitary representation and a cyclic vector , by a construction of Gelfand–Naimark–Segal type.
