statement proposition

Congruence is compatible with addition

Statement

Let nn be a positive integer, and let aa, bb, cc and dd be integers. If a≡b(modn)a \equiv b \pmod n and c≡d(modn)c \equiv d \pmod n, then a+c≡b+d(modn)a + c \equiv b + d \pmod n.

Remarks

The proof: (a+c)−(b+d)=(a−b)+(c−d)(a + c) - (b + d) = (a - b) + (c - d), and nn divides both terms. The same holds for subtraction: a−c≡b−d(modn)a - c \equiv b - d \pmod n. Together with compatibility with multiplication, this result shows that the addition of integers modulo n is well defined.

Explanations

L1 human

To find the remainder of a sum, you can add the remainders and reduce again. For example, 17≡2(mod5)17 \equiv 2 \pmod 5 and 24≡4(mod5)24 \equiv 4 \pmod 5, so 17+24=41≡2+4=6≡1(mod5)17 + 24 = 41 \equiv 2 + 4 = 6 \equiv 1 \pmod 5.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Divisibility definition
  2. Congruence modulo n definition
  3. Congruence is compatible with addition statement

What depends on this

3 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
