Definition
Let be a variety of algebras. The variety is congruence permutable if every algebra in has permuting congruences. That is, for all congruences and of , where is the composition of relations.
Remarks
Example: the variety of groups is congruence permutable. Congruences of a group correspond to normal subgroups, and the composition of the congruences of and is the congruence relation . Since for normal subgroups, the two compositions are equal. Non-example: the variety of lattices is not congruence permutable. In the chain , let identify and , and let identify and . The pair is in one composition, through . It is not in the other, because the only element -related to is , and is not -related to . For a single algebra, the congruences and permute if and only if is the join in the congruence lattice.
