Congruence relation
Builds on Algebraic structureEquivalence relation
Definition
Let be an algebra with universe . A congruence on is a relation such that:
- is an equivalence relation on ;
- for each fundamental operation of , of arity , and all with for each , also .
Remarks
Clause 2 is called the compatibility property. One often writes or for . Every algebra has the trivial congruences and .
Example: on the ring , fix and let when divides . If divides and , it divides , and .
Non-example: on the group , let when and are both positive, both negative, or both . This is an equivalence relation, but while and are not related.
In a group, the congruences correspond to the normal subgroups via . In a ring, they correspond to the two-sided ideals via .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
