Connection on a principal bundle
Builds on Principal bundleDifferential formEhresmann connection
Definition
Let be a Lie group with Lie algebra , and let be a smooth principal -bundle with right action . For , the fundamental vector field on is , where is the exponential map. A connection form on is a smooth -valued differential -form on such that:
- for every .
- for every , where is the adjoint representation.
A connection on is a connection form on .
Remarks
Equivalently, a connection is an Ehresmann connection with for all and ; the two notions correspond by . Example: on the trivial bundle , let be the left-invariant Maurer–Cartan form of , so , and let . Clause 1 holds since , and clause 2 holds since . Non-example: satisfies clause 2 but fails clause 1 when . For a matrix group the trivial example reads . The difference of two connection forms is a -valued -form that vanishes on vertical vectors and satisfies clause 2; so connections on form an affine space.
