Problem
Let be a finite set, the domain. Let be a finite set of relations on , each a subset of for some arity . An instance of consists of a finite set of variables and a finite list of constraints. Each constraint is a pair with and of arity . The constraint satisfaction problem asks whether some map satisfies every constraint, that is, for each constraint.
Remarks
Every lies in NP, since an assignment is a certificate. Equivalently, asks whether a given finite relational structure has a homomorphism to the fixed structure .
Example: let and , the relation of distinct pairs. Then an instance is a graph, with one constraint for each edge, and is graph -colouring, which is NP-complete. With instead, the problem is -colouring, which lies in P.
Schaefer's dichotomy theorem of 1978 settles the case . Tomás Feder and Moshe Vardi conjectured in 1993 that for every finite and , is in P or NP-complete. Andrei Bulatov and Dmitriy Zhuk proved this conjecture independently in 2017.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
