Definition
Let be a smooth manifold of odd dimension . A contact structure on is a smooth field of hyperplanes with the following property. Each point has an open neighborhood and a differential -form on with on and Here is the exterior derivative. A contact manifold is a pair with a contact structure. A -form defined on all of with is a contact form for .
Remarks
The condition does not depend on the choice of : if with nowhere zero, then . Equivalently, restricted to each hyperplane is nondegenerate. A contact form exists globally exactly when is coorientable.
Example: on with coordinates , let . Then and , so is a contact structure, the standard one. The unit sphere with restricted to it is another standard example.
Non-example: on the form has , so ; its kernel is tangent to the planes . By the Frobenius theorem, is exactly the condition for to be tangent to a family of surfaces.
