Continuous and residual spectrum

Definition
Let be a complex Banach space with identity map , and let be a bounded operator with spectrum and point spectrum . For , the operator is injective.
Remarks
By construction, is the disjoint union . For , the image of is dense but not all of , since a bounded bijection between Banach spaces has a bounded inverse.
Example: for on , . Indeed is injective, it is not surjective, and its image contains every finitely supported sequence, a dense set.
Non-example: for the right shift on , is not in . The image of is the closed subspace , which is not dense, so .
For the right shift, , is the open unit disc and is the unit circle. A self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space has empty residual spectrum.
