Continuous dual space
Definition
Let be or , and let be a topological vector space over . The continuous dual space of is the set of all continuous linear maps , that is, of all continuous linear forms on . With pointwise addition and scalar multiplication, is a linear subspace of the algebraic dual space of .
Remarks
The notations and are both common; some texts reserve for the algebraic dual. A linear form is continuous if and only if it is bounded on some neighbourhood of . For a normed space , is continuous if and only if , and with this norm is a Banach space. Example: on , for fixed , the form is in , since by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality. Non-example: on the space of finitely supported sequences with the sup norm, is linear but not continuous, since has norm and . For a Hausdorff locally convex space , the Hahn–Banach theorem gives that separates the points of ; for with , by contrast, .
