Continuous multiplication
Definition
Let be a topological space with a binary operation , written . The operation is a continuous multiplication if the map , , is continuous. Here carries the product topology.
Remarks
Example: with its usual topology and ordinary multiplication. The map is a polynomial in the coordinates, so it is continuous on . Non-example: with the cofinite topology and addition. Every nonempty open set of meets the set , because and are cofinite and so they intersect. So the preimage of the open set under addition contains no nonempty open set, and addition is not continuous. Continuity of implies that every left translation and every right translation is continuous. The converse fails: in the non-example above every translation is a bijection of , hence a homeomorphism for the cofinite topology. In additive notation the same condition is called continuous addition.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
