Controllability

Builds on Control system

Definition

Let x′=f(x,u)x' = f(x, u) be a control system on ℝn\R^n with control set UU. Let x0,x1∈ℝnx_0, x_1 \in \R^n and T>0T > 0. The state x1x_1 is reachable from x0x_0 in time TT if some admissible control uu on [0,T][0, T] has a trajectory with x(0)=x0x(0) = x_0 and x(T)=x1x(T) = x_1. The system is controllable if for all x0,x1∈ℝnx_0, x_1 \in \R^n there is T>0T > 0 such that x1x_1 is reachable from x0x_0 in time TT.

Remarks

For a linear system x′=Ax+Bux' = A x + B u with U=ℝmU = \R^m, controllability in some time implies controllability in every time T>0T > 0. Example: the double integrator x1′=x2x_1' = x_2, x2′=ux_2' = u with U=ℝU = \R is controllable. Given (a0,b0)(a_0, b_0), (a1,b1)(a_1, b_1) and T>0T > 0, take the cubic polynomial pp with p(0)=a0p(0) = a_0, p′(0)=b0p'(0) = b_0, p(T)=a1p(T) = a_1, p′(T)=b1p'(T) = b_1; then u=p′′u = p'' gives the trajectory (x1,x2)=(p,p′)(x_1, x_2) = (p, p'), which joins the two states. Non-example: the system x1′=ux_1' = u, x2′=0x_2' = 0 is not controllable, because x2x_2 stays constant along every trajectory, so (0,1)(0, 1) is not reachable from (0,0)(0, 0). Weaker notions are local controllability near an equilibrium and small-time local controllability.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
