statement theorem
Convergents converge to the number
Statement
Let be an irrational real number, and let be the convergents of its continued fraction expansion. Then for each , and as .
Remarks
The convergents with even increase toward , and the convergents with odd decrease toward . For a rational , the last convergent is equal to . Conversely, each infinite simple continued fraction converges to an irrational number, and this number has that continued fraction as its expansion. For example, is a convergent of , and .
Explanations
L1 human
The convergents of get closer and closer to , and the error is smaller than one over the square of the denominator. This makes them very good rational approximations of .
