Definition
Let be a field, let , and let be an algebraic set with ideal . The coordinate ring of is the quotient ring of the polynomial ring. It is also written or .
Remarks
Two polynomials have the same class in if and only if they define the same function on . So is the ring of polynomial functions . It is a finitely generated -algebra, generated by the classes of . It is a reduced ring, since is a radical ideal.
Example: for the parabola over an infinite field, , through and .
Non-example: the ring is not the coordinate ring of any algebraic set, because it has the nonzero nilpotent element .
is irreducible if and only if is an integral domain; when is algebraically closed, this says that is an affine variety. If is algebraically closed, Hilbert's Nullstellensatz shows that the points of correspond to the maximal ideals of . The point corresponds to the ideal of functions that vanish at .
