Correlation coefficient
Definition
Let and be real random variables on one probability space with finite and positive variances. The correlation coefficient of and is where is the covariance and , are the standard deviations.
Remarks
By the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, . if and only if almost surely for some reals and . The sign of is the sign of . The coefficient does not depend on units: if . For a sample of pairs , the sample correlation coefficient uses sample means and sample sums of squares instead of expectations.
Explanations
L1 human
The correlation coefficient tells how close the points are to a straight line. A value near means a strong increasing linear relation, and a value near means a strong decreasing one. A value near means that there is no linear relation.
