definition

Standard deviation

Definition

Let XX be a real random variable with finite variance. The standard deviation of XX is the square root σX=Var⁡(X)=E[(X−E[X])2].\sigma_X = \sqrt{\operatorname{Var}(X)} = \sqrt{E\left[(X - E[X])^2\right]}.

Remarks

The standard deviation is in the same units as XX, but the variance is in squared units. For a,b∈Ra, b \in \mathbb{R}, σaX+b=∣a∣ σX\sigma_{aX + b} = |a| \, \sigma_X. For the normal distribution N(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2), the standard deviation is σ\sigma. About 68%68\% of the mass lies within one standard deviation of the mean.

Explanations

L1 human

The standard deviation is a typical size of the distance between a value and the mean. A small standard deviation means that the values stay close to the mean. A large one means that they spread out.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
