Definition
Let be a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold with Einstein tensor , carrying matter with stress–energy tensor . Let , where is Newton's gravitational constant and the speed of light. The cosmological constant is the real number in the Einstein field equations in the form
Remarks
Writing the term on the right gives with . This is the stress–energy tensor of a perfect fluid with energy density and pressure , the vacuum energy. Example: de Sitter space with metric , in units with and , satisfies and , so ; it solves the equations with and . Non-example: a nonconstant function in place of is not allowed when : taking the divergence and using gives .
