Cosmological principle
Builds on Lorentzian manifoldSpacetimeIsometry
Definition
Let be a spacetime, that is, a time-oriented four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold. Let be a unit timelike vector field on , the velocity of a family of observers. Let be a foliation of by spacelike hypersurfaces orthogonal to . The spacetime satisfies the cosmological principle with respect to and when it is spatially homogeneous and isotropic in the following sense.
- Homogeneity: for each and all points , there is an isometry of that maps onto itself and maps to .
- Isotropy: let , and let be unit vectors orthogonal to . Then there is an isometry of that fixes , maps to , and has differential sending to .
Remarks
Minkowski space with and the slices satisfies both clauses: translations in space give homogeneity, and rotations about a point give isotropy. The Schwarzschild spacetime fails homogeneity: the curvature invariant depends on the radius, so no isometry maps a point near the centre to a point far away. Isotropy about every point already implies homogeneity. Under these two clauses each slice , with its induced metric, has constant sectional curvature, and the metric takes the Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker form.
