Cotangent space of a local ring
Builds on Local ringResidue fieldVector space
Definition
Let be a local ring with residue field . The quotient is an -module killed by , hence a vector space over with . The cotangent space of is this -vector space . Its dual is the Zariski tangent space of .
Remarks
The scalar multiplication is well defined because .
Example: let be a field and , the localization of the polynomial ring at . Then and has the basis given by the classes of and , so it has dimension . For the cusp , the classes of and still form a basis, because ; the dimension is although the cusp is a curve.
Non-example: the quotient is in general not a vector space over . In with , the element acts on by sending the class of to the nonzero class of , so does not kill it.
