Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold of dimension , with Levi-Civita connection , Ricci curvature and scalar curvature . Let be the Schouten tensor. The Cotton tensor of is the -tensor for vector fields ; in index notation .
Remarks
Example: if is Einstein with for a constant and , then is constant and is a constant multiple of . Since , also , so .
Non-example: for the factor is not defined, so there is no Cotton tensor of a surface in this sense.
is antisymmetric in its last two arguments, and its trace over the first two arguments vanishes by the contracted Bianchi identity. For , if and only if is locally conformally flat. For , the divergence of the Weyl tensor is times , up to a sign fixed by the conventions. Some texts use the opposite sign or a different order of indices.
